Determination of the mud weight window, optimum drilling trajectory, and wellbore stability using geomechanical parameters in one of the Iranian hydrocarbon reservoirs

Abstract The challenges behind this research were encountered while drilling into the Ilam, Mauddud, Gurpi, and Mishrif Formations, where severe instability-related issues observed across weaker formations above reservoir intervals. In paper, geomechanical parameters carried out to determine optimum mud weight windows safe deviation trajectories using parameters. We propose a workflow equivalent window (EMW) that resulted in 11.18–12.61 ppg which is suitable for Gurpi formation 9.36–13.13 Ilam respectively. To estimate trajectories, Poisson’s ratio, Young’s modulus, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) determined. These illustrate an trajectory angle of 45° (Azimuth 277°) Mauddud Formations less than 35° Formation. Our analysis reveals maximum horizontal stress ratio have most impact on determining trajectories. On contrary, vertical modulus minimum This study can be used as reference optimal overcome instability future wellbore planning study.
